New York Jets 7 Round Mock Draft: Post-Super Bowl Edition

Round 1 Pick 20: Ezekiel Elliott: RB: Ohio State

ezekiel-elliott-vs-alabama-3c93244266d567e1Last year Mike Maccagnan went with the philosophy of taking the best player available when he selected Leonard Williams with the sixth overall pick. In 2016 look for the Jets to follow that same philosophy as they select the best running back in the draft class. Elliott has proven he can be an every down workhorse with back to back 1800 plus yard seasons including 23 this past season for the Buckeyes. Given the devaluation of the running back position, Eliott falls to the Jets at 20 and gives the Jets a workhorse and potential star at running back. Given that the Jets have three unrestricted free agents at the position, and Pro Bowler Chris Ivory in line for a major pay day Elliot not only gives the Jets a talented first rounder, but fills a crucial need.

Round 2 Pick 51: Le’Raven Clark: OT Texas Tech
le-

The Jets have two problems at tackle. On the left side D’Brickashaw Ferguson is past his prime and beginning to show signs at regression, while on the right side Breno Giacomini has been a huge disappointment and figures to be a cap casualty given his bloated salary. Clark figures to solve both those problems and could start at right tackle while being groomed to take over the blind side eventually. Clark will have to adjust from playing in a two point stance primarily at Texas Tech, and while he could struggle initially in run blocking there is no question that he has the skill set to protect the passer. Clark is a project but is the best offensive lineman and player available at this point for the Jets.

Round 3 Pick 83: Jordan Jenkins OLB Georgia 12669494.jpg

The Jets need to upgrade their pass rush and address that need in the third round. The outside linebacker position was anything but set in the Jets base 3-4 last year. While Lorenzo Mauldin played well enough to seemingly earn a starting spot at one of the positions, it’s clear the Jets need another edge rusher. While Bruce Irvin is an enticing free agent that the Jets will pursue, you can never have to many pass rushers and anything would be an upgrade over the 35 year old Calvin Pace. Jenkins finished with 10.5 tackles for a loss, 12 QB hits, and 4 sacks for Georgia last season. a hybrid pass rusher who can stand up on the outside or put his hand in the dirt, Jenkins knock is that he is not a great coverage guy. However, he shows great pass rushing ability and was a great leader as the team’s defensive captain. A smart player with a constant motor, he fits the bill of the type of player that Todd Bowles is looking for an could finally give the Jets pass rush a big boost.

Round 4 Pick 115: Cardale Jones QB Ohio State

635553989143903819-SW16-QB-1229-68438126

There’s an old saying in the NFL. Draft a quarterback every year until you find the right one. Cardale Jones has tools that are off the chart including a rocket arm and great mobility. However, New York would be the perfect situation for Jones to learn and develop as a quarterback and not face the pressures of being the starter in year one. Given Gailey’s quarterback friendly system that gives the quarterback plenty of passing and throwing lanes, Jones could thrive in New York once he gets a year or two under his belt learning the offense. A sleeper pick that has top notch tools, Jones could be a franchise quarterback in the making if New York can develop him.

Round 5: Bralon Addison WR Oregon

131116.mca_.ODE_.fbc_.Utah_.135

No team lined up with more 3 or 4 wide receiver sets in 2015 then the New York Jets. Given their value on the wide receiver position, Gang Green could always use another weapon. Addison is another burner from Oregon who not only could stretch the field, but give the Jets a slot threat they lacked in 2015. Another perk to drafting Addison is he would be an explosive returner for New York, something they severely lacked last season. A player that fills two needs is right up the Jets alley.

Round 6: Pick Traded to Houston for Ryan Fitzpatrick

Round 7: Nile Lawrence-Stample DT FSU

RLBGEDXTWKOFJOU.20140701063717

In 2015 Damon Harrison was the best nose tackle in football. The problem? With Muhammad Wilkerson likely to get the franchise tags, big snacks will probably be playing somewhere else in 2016 as New York doesn’t seemingly have the cap space to keep every member on the defensive line. However, if Harrison has taught the Jets anything it’s that you don’t need to spend a high pick to find a quality nose tackle. Harrison was an undrafted free agent but New York will look for his replacement in round 7 with Lawrence-Stample from FSU. A second All-ACC selection last season he is a big run stopper in the middle which is what the Jets stout run defense will need. If Bowles wants to continue with a 3-4 base instead of a 4-3, the Jets will need to find a nose tackle to fit the scheme. Lawrence-Stample has the upside to be a great nose tackle in the NFL.

Don’t Come A Colin. Why the NY Jets Should Avoid Kaepernick

It has been reported that quarterback Colin Kaepernick wants out of bay area to become a quarterback on Broadway for the New York Jets. Even if Kaepernick wants to be the new leader of the Jets, the issue is that New York should have no interest in him.

Before this dream can even happen, a lot will have to happen with the 49ers. There are 495262332many different avenues the organization can explore. The first, and most likely is to keep him as their quarterback because of the lack of enticing options in the upcoming draft and more importantly the franchise has brought in Chip Kelly. Kelly’s option offense and use of a mobile quarterback seem like too much of a perfect fit in his system and I personally feel that one of the reasons Kelly wanted to be in San Francisco was to insert Kapernick into his offense.

However, Kaepernick has shown regression in throwing from the pocket and appears to have lost the locker room around him. Don’t froget, he played so poorly that the 49ers felt that Blaine Gabbert was a better option at quarterback. There are many things that are open to debate in the NFL except for this, Gabbert stinks.

If the 49ers are ready to move on they have until April 1st to cut Kaepernick before his $11.9 Million contract for 2016 becomes guaranteed. True, the Jets could sign Kaep as a free agent, but if the 49ers really want to move on, they will try to trade him in order to get some type of compensation.

Even if the stars do align and Colin Kaepernick becomes available, the Jets should not sign Kaepernick. There are a myriad of reasons why New York should not be enticed by the young quarterback.

For one, he has shown regression in throwing from the which is the most important aspect of playing the position in the National Football League. Another major reason is the contract. The Jets cannot afford Kaepernick at his current salary and even if they could sign him, the team is limited in what the can do for cap space.

But the biggest reason for New York not to pursue Kaepernick is that they already have a better and more cost efficient solution, Ryan Fitzpatrick. Now does Fitzpatrick have the potential upside of a Kapernick? No, but he’s a more consistent quarterback who is

Brandon Marshall is already endorsing Fitzpatrick to be the starter in 2016

coming off his best season as a pro. Also with a year under his belt in offensive coordinator Chan Gailey, Fitzpatrick could take another step forward in 2016 while the organization continues to develop last year’s fourth round pick Bryce Petty. It’s also clear that despite his horrendous three interception game in Buffalo to end the season, his teammates are confident in his abilities for next year.

On ESPN’s First Take Brandon Marshall vehemently responded when asked about Kaepernick to the Jets said “I don’t want Kaepernick,” … “I think he’s good. My guy’s Fitz. It’s nothing against Kaepernick. … I have my quarterback, so I’m good.” For good reason both Marshall and Fitzpatrick are coming off career years with Marshall snagging 14 of Fitzpatrick’s 31 touchdown passes.

While the Jets may think that the grass on greener with Kaepernick under center, their best option for 2016 is already in the building for a fraction of the cost.

The Lost Boys: The 2015 Season is Officially Lost for Dallas

i

Tony Romo’s injury is the final nail in the coffin for the Cowboys 2015 season

On Thursday evening there wasn’t much to be thankful for in Dallas, Texas as Tony Romo headed to the locker room. After heroically rushing back to try and save the Cowboys season, as Romo laid on the turf after a brutal hit by the Carolina defense the same thought ran through everyone’s mind. This season is over.

Technically speaking the Cowboys haven’t been officially eliminated from the NFC East, or as it should be called the NFC LEast. However, given that the team is 3-8 and will once again have to go with the incumbent Matt Cassel, the Cowboys should start waving the white flags.

It’s never easy to blame a season on injuries, but the injury bug is the main reason why Dallas is in their current predicament. It’s been a season that has highlights the Cowboys’ flaws and what they need to improve if this team wants to compete at a high level in 2016.

What are these flaws? An inability to run the football like they did a year ago and more importantly a defense that continues to I’ve games away. In six of the eight Dallas losses this season, the Cowboys had a lead that their defense couldn’t protect. This season also proved that the team needs to invest in a suitable backup for Romo given his injury history and age.

1448591936-NS_CowPanth_AL17_47480967_17985

For Dez Bryant and Dallas what once looked like a season to remember has become one they would like to forget.

So what now? The Cowboys have to evaluate their roster to prepare for 2016. One thing the team must consider is what to do with All-Pro wide receiver Dez Bryant. Like Romo, Bryant rushed back from an injury and has not looked healthy on the field. Given their current predicament, it only makes sense to shut down Bryant to make sure that he is completely healthy for next season. True, the Cowboys are still technically in the race, but instead of chasing an almost impossible playoff hope this season, Dallas should reload and prepare to make a run next season.

Greg-Hardy

Given the distraction and lack of production this season, The Cowboys should release Hardy

Finally it’s time for the Cowboys to get the elephant out of the room, and by elephant I mean Greg Hardy. Given the details of the domestic violence case now being released and the locker room issues he has already caused their is no good reason to keep him on the team. Hardy has produced on the field and the only defense that Jerry Jones has had for Hardy’s issues is that he helped the team win games. Given that this season is pretty much over and that the frustration could boil over in the coming weeks, it only makes sense to release this powder keg before their is an explosion the the Dallas locker room during the trudge to finish the season. At this point it’s anyone’s guess on what the Cowboys will do, but I strongly recommend these two actions to put the team in a better position next season.

2015 was simply a disaster for the Dallas Cowboys. Now the key will be to pick up the shattered pieces from the 2015 season and begin the process to rebuild the Dallas roster back into a serious contender is 2016.

ChipWreck: Is This Chip Kelly’s Last Year in Philly?

The Eagles have landed. In a year where the NFC East was ripe for the taking, the Philadelphia Eagles 2015 season has been a disaster. After

chip-kelly-glare

After two 10 win seasons, Kelly’s Eagles are 4-6 in 2015

back-to-back 10 win seasons Chip Kelly was the toast in the city of brotherly love. Now, those same fans who once praised Kelly are sharpening their pitchforks to run the third year coach out of town.

At 4-6 the Eagles are still in the NFC East, but after rookie quarterback Jameis Winston threw five touchdowns and Doug Martin ran for over 200 yards, the Eagles playoff chances are fading fast. This tension has been building in Philadelphia since Kelly took over football operations. In that time Kelly has let successful players such as Lesean McCoy, Desean Jackson, Nick Foles, and Jeremy Maclin go while bringing in players that made the Philly faithful scratch their heads. While Nick Foles played at a pro-bowl level, Kelly brought in the extremely fragile and unproved Sam Bradford who shockingly couldn’t make it through another NFL season.

The main problem? Kelly’s once dominant and playmaking offense is

staler then a two week old cheesesteak. Chip’s confidence that his system was greater then the players has come back to haunt him as the Eagles have struggled to move the ball all season while his former players are making splashes in their new NFL homes. Fans have to wonder what kind of team the Eagles would be if those players still donned the green.

So what now? It would shock me if the Eagles fired Chip Kelly especially one year into giving him complete control. However, I predict that Chip Kelly will leave Philly at the end of this season. Why? He’s always been an opportunist, and their are just too many great opportunities out there. Don’t believe me?

Consider this. Chip Kelly was dying to get Marcus Mariota in this past draft and couldn’t pull off a deal. The Titans need a new coach and would probably give Chip full control if he became the coach. Also given the state of the AFC South, Kelly could see an easier road to the playoffs as well.

Still, there’s always college. With so many great college jobs that are available, or may become available he may go back to college football and

look to win a National Championship. Possible jobs that could open include Texas and LSU while jobs that are already enticing include USC and the University of Miami. We know that Kelly can coach in college, and in recent years coaches like Saban and Harbaugh have thrived in their returns to the NCAA.

Could the Eagles make the playoffs? Sure. Could Kelly return next season? Of course. Still the way this season has gone and how the team has appeared to quit on Kelly, or at least the defense in the game against Tampa Bay, all eyes will been on Philadelphia as the soap opera plays itself out. Once thing is for certain, it certainly isn’t sunny in Philadelphia right now.

NFL’s COLOR RUSH Needs to be Stopped!

Stop the madness! Stop the madness please! Two weeks into the NFL’s Color Rush uniform program it is clear that this idea was terrible. No, it’s no just that last week’s designs left millions of color blind fans scratching their heads trying to figure out which team had the ball, or that it looked like Christmas vomited in the Meadowlands.

If that wasn’t enough we get the Titans and Jaguars in the Thursday Night matchup tonight in uniforms that just make fans groan. tempColorRush1_2--nfl_mezz_1280_1024Let’s start with the Titans. I understand that they’ve worn
the powder blue color in the past but the monotone light blue look is horribly. That’s the main problem with the color rush uniforms is that it’s basically one solid color. If the pants or even the socks were a different color it would balance out the uniforms much better. Instead the Titans looks like oversized infants in baby blue onesies.

And then there are the Jaguars, or the Gold Rangers from Power Rangers. I really can’t tell the difference. This isn’t even a Notre Dame gold and 635829496689895063-5pzJ2j5ZeqhTGfgnEMAEeVv2btTK1--BXveVcd9YUOElooks like the mustard one might find in the back of the cabinet that’s five years past it’s expiration date. What’s even worse? The fact that the Jaguars didn’t go with a all gold helmet but keep their terrible two-tone helmet that’s already a disaster.

Do I give the NFL credit for trying something new? Yes, but this idea just seems like a quick cash grab in order to sell more jerseys. Instead of pushing the envelope with new or innovative designs, the league has just decided to basically keep the same uniform, dose it in one bright color and they’re done. I love the idea of new uniforms and having the Thursday game be the embodies different uniforms but the NFL is missing a golden opportunity.

Instead of Color Rush the NFL should do Throwback Thursday next season. That way fans can see the great looks of the past while fans of those respective teams can buy the throwbacks at the team store. There are so many teams with great throwbacks it’s an opportunity for the NFL to not only make additional revenue off of uniforms, but to honor it’s rich history.

Buffalo Bills v Tennessee Titans

Just look at what could have been this week. The Titans could have worn their Oilers throwbacks. What about the Jaguars? Even though Jacksonville has only been in existence since 1995, they still can use throwback uniforms. My suggestion would be their original 1995 uniforms which utilize their original logo and teal colors.
MB_runningThere are so many teams with iconic throwbacks and it would be great to see them again. A couple of favorites could be the Elway Broncos, the Eagles kelly greens, and of course the Bucs creamsicles. The hashtag throwback thursday has already become a staple in pop culture, so why can’t the NFL utilize this? There are plenty of great opportunities to honor the past uniforms rather then just running out this monotone disasters that are the Color Rush threads. I understand that Color Rush is here to stay for this season, but can we please let these terrible uniforms go after the season and give the people what they really want? Throwback Thursday Night Football.
