Last Hoorah: Should this be it for Peyton Manning?

If Peyton Manning wins should he retire?

If Peyton Manning wins should he retire?

It was a season to remember. With fifty-five touchdowns and over five thousand passing yards, Peyton Manning crafted the most masterful season in NFL history. Many experts may say this is the best that Manning has ever been, the pinnacle of Mount Everest for the quarterback position. Now only one win away from a Super Bowl and football immortality, the question is if Peyton Manning hoists the Lombardi Trophy, should this be it?

At the age of 38, Peyton Manning isn’t exactly a spring chicken. True he probably could continue to play a few more seasons given the lack of punishment he has endured being hit as a quarterback. Still, there is one important aspect that tends to get overlooked. Peyton Manning’s neck is a cause for concern. Two years after major neck surgery, Manning has already said that he will visit doctor’s this offseason to see how much his neck has deteriorated. If Manning wins this Super Bowl, and the doctor’s tell him that his neck has deteriorated significantly, then I think he will strongly consider retirement. He will have finally won multiple Super Bowls, and a Super Bowl for two different franchises. This is a feat that has never been done before. Plus, would another Super Bowl really mean that much? He’s in an elite club with only a few quarterbacks that have won multiple Super Bowls. Add in his regular season success, Manning would have to be considered one of if not the greatest quarterback in NFL history.

What would be a more fitting end to Manning’s career then a Super Bowl victory? If he loses this sunday I have no doubts that he will be back under center, even with the health concerns. He needs one more Super Bowl victory. Let’s say they win this Super Bowl and he comes back. What if he gets hurt next season and can’t play again? What if he can’t win another Super Bowl? Wouldn’t it be better if Manning if Manning left in the prime of his career rather than limp out pathetically at the end? While many football fans want to see Manning continue his career, me included, there is a time where even the greats have to make the difficult decision to retire. Don’t be surprised if the Broncos win the Super Bowl, that Peyton Manning may not be under center for them in 2014.

Why Sports Fans Hate Justin Bieber

My god I have a fever, and his name is Bieber. Seriously every where I look this week it’s Bieber this and Bieber that. Sure there will always be Bieber haters, but people who like and appreciate sports are some of the biggest Justin Bieber haters. No this venom doesn’t come from Bieber screwing up the national anthem, or his pop songs being blasted throughout the arena. It is from Bieber’s actions in the world of sports whether it’s being a fan or actually participating in the sporting event. He maybe the biggest star on the planet right now, but he is far from being the most loved celebrity. So without any further ado, here is why sports fans hate Bieber Fever.

  • He think he’s an athlete
Bieber a baller? Not a chance

Bieber a baller? Not a chance

Sure we all think we are athletes, or deserve to play at the professional level, but at some point in time most sports fans realize that they just aren’t made for sports. However, Justin Bieber thinks he’s the next Air Canada. Justin, if anything you’re a hockey player, because that is what Canada is all about. You’re not a basketball player. Stop rapping about your baller skills and pretending like you could be a great basketball player. Dude, your 5’7 and thats including your haircut. We saw you play in that celebrity all-star game, if you want to be a baller maybe work on your jump shot instead of racing Lamborghinis. Sports fans hate that you won’t accept the facts that your not a baller and just a fan. If anything, you’d be the water boy on a basketball team, not the all star you somehow think you are.

  • Floyd Mayweather
Why are you in the ring?

Why are you in the ring?

First off, Floyd Mayweather is hated in his own right for being an arrogant person, so just by affiliation people will hate you. However, Mayweather could knock you out before you could finish a taunt. Bieber, not so much. Yes, I know he was there to hold up the belts for this fight, but come on Justin just stay out of the ring. We all know you think you’re a fighter by threatening people and paparazzi to fight. We also know that you’re the kind of guy who talks a big game but when he gets smacked in the mouth he just can’t take it. Plus, flaunting title belts that aren’t even yours, doesn’t exactly scream that you’re a tough guy.

  • He breaks sports’ laws
    Watch your step

    Watch your step

Justin, hockey fans would give almost anything to be with Lord Stanley’s Cup. Be humble and don’t embarrass yourself. Oops, too late. Any sports fan knows that when you step on a team’s logo, especially in the locker room, it is a huge sign of disrespect. It basically says that you think you are bigger and better than the entire organization and that they are beneath you. Blackhawks fans certainly weren’t happy when this photo of Bieber clearly standing on the Blackhawks locker room logo hit the internet. Not only did he make the mistake, but he continued to stand on the logo and take pictures. I know one things, Blackhawks fans aren’t going to the next Bieber concert in the Windy City.

  • He is ungrateful for great seats
Wow I have court side seats, let me check my Twitter

Wow I have court side seats, let me check my Twitter

We all want court side seats. For most fans this would be a once in a lifetime experience. However, it always seems like Justin Bieber gets these tickets, and doesn’t care. Most celebrities are into the game and are passionate about their court side seats, just look at Spike Lee. Not Bieber, despite having the best seats in the house, and the hottest date in the house, he never seems to take interest in the game. Rather then watch the game, he feels it’s more important to tweet and hashtag about front row seats. Great prioritizing Bieber, whats more important watching a great game with the gorgeous Selena Gomez, or texting? Texting? Really? Not what I would be doing. Justin, if you’re not going to watch the game don’t come! Let someone else get those seats who will actually enjoy the game.

  • The way he dresses at games
This isn't a club or a music video!

This isn’t a club or a music video!

When most people go to a game they will wear their team’s colors or jerseys. Not the Biebs, he dresses like an idiot. Notice how all the Heat fans are wearing white? Bieber is like whatever, I’ll sit here in my leather t-shirt and massive gold chains and sun glasses. Justin, this isn’t a club, a music video, or some poster shoot. Lose the sunglasses, the gold, and the leather t-shirt. Wear some Heat gear! Plus a leather t-shirt? What man wears a leather t-shirt? We know you’re rich, you don’t have to remind us every 5 seconds. Just put on a Lebron jersey and cheer like everyone else.

  • He’s a bandwagon fan
Just pick a team, stop being a band wagon fan!

Just pick a team, stop being a band wagon fan!

Finally, Justin Bieber is the worst type of sports fan in existence. He’s a bandwagon fan. Nothing is worst then bandwagon fans, who only root for the current winning team, or say they’ve rooted for the championship team all along. Justin Bieber has taken this fandom into a whole new territory. Seriously, the kid roots for every time. Just look at this picture. If you google Justin Bieber and sports he literally has worn every team’s logo. He even wears multiple teams at the same time. Justin you can’t wear a San Francisco hat and a Rangers jacket, make up for mind dammit! My god Bieber switched teams more often than Taylor Swift writes a song about an ex boyfriend.

  • What do you think? Is Bieber one of the worst sports fans in the world? Do people have a right to hate him? Comment below!

Why Muhlenberg Hockey is the best sporting event on campus

  • Excitement of Hockey
    Fast paced action

    Fast paced action

Hockey is one of the most exciting sporting events to watch. The speed, grace, and power of hockey players is truly something to behold live. Whether it’s a player flying down the ice, to a bone crunching hit in the corner, hockey provides the excitement of speed and violence that can get even a first time fan’s adrenaline pumping. Want excitement on a friday night? Come to a game!

  • Personalities
Who doesn't love a team with personality?

Who doesn’t love a team with personality?

Whoever said “blondes have the most fun” has clearly never met hockey players. Sure the players might be a little goofy, but they’re just having fun. The Muhlenberg team is no exception, filled with fun guys that just want to have a good time. Who really wants a team that is too serious? Those teams are no fun.  Why not root for some of the funnest guys on the Muhlenberg campus? Win or lose, you will be entertained.

  • They look good:
    Back in Black

    Back in Black

Muhlenberg maybe the cardinal red and grey, but man do they look good in black. The hockey team has some of the sharpest uniforms on campus, including my personal favorite uniforms, the road blacks. Nothing says intimidating like a team dressed in black from head to toe. While their uniforms may different from the norm here at Muhlenberg, it makes the team stand out in a good way.

  • They score…a lot!!
Putting the biscuit in the basket

Putting the biscuit in the basket

You gotta love an exciting team. Muhlenberg can put up goals in bunches with their dynamic offense and aggressive defense men. Seriously watching this team is like watching a highlight reel on ESPN. Not only can they put the puck in the net, but make it look easy with great plays that will make you just say wow.

  • Get away from campus
One of the best teams on campus

One of the best teams on campus

Lets face it. There are times that you just want to get out of the Muhlenberg bubble and get away. With the games off campus it gives students a chance to get off of the Berg campus and a chance to escape for a couple of hours. Plus the bus trip is a great way to meet new people that you may not have met otherwise.

  • Team’s mascot
Duncan is the team's mascot and #1 fan

Duncan is the team’s mascot and #1 fan

Sure we have the Mule mascot, but the hockey team has its own mascot and #1 fan. Duncan is the team’s little brother who is at every game cheering his heart out. He loves to come to practice whenever he can and has been a huge part of the program for the past two years. The players and fans love him and his family. Chances are if you come to a hockey game you’ll see Berg’s best fan along the glass cheering for his favorite team.

  • The Fans
Some of the most passionate fans on campus

Some of the most passionate fans on campus

The hockey games are a romp at Muhlenberg. The Muhlenmaniacs come out in full forces and let their presence known. If you love to cheer, you need to come. The fans are an integral part of the team’s success as they have given the Mules one of the best home ice advantages in the conference.

Let Him In! Why Mike Piazza deserves to be in the Hall of Fame

Mike Piazza's 9/11 home run was one of the most memorable homers in baseball history

Mike Piazza’s 9/11 home run was one of the most memorable homers in baseball history

How is it that the best hitter at his position is not in the Hall of Fame? The fact that Mike Piazza is not in Cooperstown just proves how much of a mess the baseball world really is. By playing in the “steroid era”, Piazza has been placed in baseball’s rogues gallery under the premise that he could have used steroids. While no hard evidence has come out on Piazza, despite having seven years to find evidence, the Hall of Fame continues to let other players in. How about Frank Thomas? He played under the same circumstances as Piazza but hasn’t been marred by the steroids acquisitions? What happened America? I thought this was the land where you were innocent until proven guilty? Mike Piazza is a Hall of Famer, and here is why.

While Frank Thomas was a first round pick in the MLB Draft, most people forget about Piazza’s long and hard road to the top. Piazza was selected in

Piazza had to overcome the odds just to make it to the show

Piazza had to overcome the odds just to make it to the show

62nd round, and he was drafted by Tommy Lasorda because he was doing a favor for Piazza’s father. In the minors, he had to learn to play a new position, catcher, and prove that he could make it to the majors. In 1993 Piazza erupted on the Major League scene where he won the National League rookie of the year by hitting .315 with 35 homers and 112 runs batted in. With the Dodgers Piazza became one of the most feared hitters in baseball and changed the way we looked at catchers.

Most major league catchers don’t get remembered for their bats. They play a physically grueling position that takes a toll on their bodies. If a catcher can start 140 games for a team, it is considered a good season. Most teams would be happy with a good defensive catcher who could call a game. Then they’d stick that catcher at the bottom of the order and hope they could scrape out a few hits here and there.

Piazza was a hitter first, catcher second which broke the catcher stereotype

Piazza was a hitter first, catcher second which broke the catcher stereotype

This changed with Piazza who was the polar opposite. He became a slugging catcher with a lethal bat. He broke the stereotype of defense first, offense second for the catching position. If anything he was one of the worst defensive catchers in history. Piazza was a trend setter, he changed the game. Now we look at catchers to not only catch well, but also to be competent hitters. Look at Buster Posey, Joe Mauer, and Matt Wieters to name a few. While Piazza’s prime was in Dodgers’ blue, his greatest impact was in Queens where he became an icon of the Big Apple.

On May 22, 1999, New York baseball changed forever. The New York Mets traded for Mike Piazza and brought his big bat to the big apple. For a franchise that had been terrible in the early 90s, and were fresh off a season where they missed the playoffs, the Mets needed a savior. With Piazza’s help the Mets became a contender by making the playoffs in 1999, and then the World Series in 2000. Most importantly he gave the Mets a superstar. In a time where it seemed like all Mets fans were bring drowned by the constant snickering and boasting of Yankees’ fans during their dynasty, Piazza gave the Mets a voice in New York. While the next few seasons would be tough, Piazza continued to produce at a high level and eventually Piazza passed Carlton Fisk’s record on May 5, 2004 for the most home runs hit by a catcher. That day he belted number 352, a number that no catcher is close to catching.

Piazza deserves a place in Cooperstown because of his production and impact on the game

Piazza deserves a place in Cooperstown because of his production and impact on the game

In most cases, this would have been Piazza’s shining moment, the one everybody remembers, but it isn’t. He’s known for an event bigger then baseball.

On September 11th, 2001, a horrific and unspeakable attack happened to our country. 10 days later, the Mets played the first game since the terrorist attacks that rocked this country. There was an uneasiness that hung in the air. Is this what we should be doing? Is it too soon? Is it safe? It was hard to cheer through the tears and fear. That night, the Mets were losing 2-1 in the eighth to their arch rivals the Braves. Then a crack rang throughout Shea Stadium breaking the silence. Piazza had smashed a fastball over the centerfield fence to give the Mets the lead, 3-2, and gave the crowd something to finally cheer about. Piazza did something that became more than a baseball highlight, he gave a city devastated by disaster hope and helped to begin the healing process.

After a second straight snub from the Hall of Fame, it is clear that Piazza is being cheated out of Cooperstown. While playing the most physically grueling position in the sport, a position that beats players up and wears them down, Piazza still was an offensive force. Despite his decline in his last few seasons, Piazza finished with a career .308 average, 427 home runs, and 1,335 runs batted in. He was a 12 time all-star, 10 time silver slugger, and rookie of the year in 1993. With all these statistics, the way he dominated when he played, and by being the best offensive player at his position in history, Piazza being snub just proves the bureaucracy of baseball writers. Just because they think someone did something, without any proof, gives them the right to deny a player’s shrine in Cooperstown that they deserve? While this is certainly not the last Hall of Fame controversy, especially with more of the so-called steroid era candidates coming up, this is just another sad commentary on the mess in baseball. Mike Piazza rightfully deserves his place and Cooperstown, and the longer they keep him out will just continue to compound the mess when it comes to judging this era of the game. Mike Piazza has to be in   on the next Hall of Fame ballot, or else the writers of baseball will be cheating one of the greatest hitters of all time.

Why Johnny Manziel will be pick #1 in the NFL Draft

Johnny Football will be the first player off the board

Johnny Football will be the first player off the board

And with the first pick in the 2014 NFL Draft the Houston Texans select…. Johnny Manziel, quarterback, Texas A&M. Even though the draft is months away I believe that the number one pick in the draft is set. While some experts may think the Houston Texans will take Jadeveon Clowney or Terry Bridgewater with the number one pick, I strongly believe that the Texans will take Johnny Football to be their franchise quarterback.

Since their inauguration into the NFL back in 2002, the Texans have never had a true franchise quarterback. David Carr was a flop, and while Matt Schaub did have some nice moments, turnovers and injuries prevented him from being the Texans’ franchise quarterback. Back in 2007, the Texans were in a similar predicament. In that Draft, they selected Mario Williams with the number one overall pick over Texas’ quarterback Vince Young. While in hindsight this was the right move, I believe that there is still some regret within the organization that they did not draft Vince Young. Now, in 2014 the Texans may have hit the jackpot.

Johnny Manziel has electrified fans at College Station and is now taking his talents to the big stage. While Terry Bridgewater may be the highest rated quarterback by draft experts, Johnny Manziel is not far behind. While Manziel is widely known for his off the field shenanigans, the Texans should and probably will roll the dice on him. Sure he has his baggage, such as partying a little to hard at A&M, but Manziel is a playmaker and a Heisman trophy winner. The Texans need a playmaker who can get the ball into the hands of their dangerous receivers and revitalize this offense. With his arm and leagues, the Texans probably believe he can do just that.

Drafting Manziel goes far beyond just the football field. The Houston Texans need an icon. What would be better than a quarterback from Texas? He was born in Texas and helped make A&M a top program. Fans would love the pick because he is their player, a fellow Texan. In a state that is football crazy wouldn’t it be nice to have an NFL quarterback with a Texan as the quarterback. Sounds like a dream to me. Not to mention it makes sense from the financial stand point. Can you imagine how many more tickets and jerseys the Texans will sell if Manziel heads to Houston?

With Manziel in Houston, the Texans could be a playoff contender next season. They’re in a weak division, and despot their record have a roster filled with talent. If it wasn’t for the god awful quarterback play, this team would be far away from the number one overall pick. Sure many things can change before the combined, but Manziel to the Texans makes too much sense. It is his home state, A&M fans are close, he’s talented, and he’s a quarterback! Sure the Texans may trade out of one or go in a different direction, but if they pass on Manziel, it could be a move that this franchise will regret. Both financially and in the win column.

What do you think the Texans should do? Take our poll and comment below!

New York Jets Full Mock Draft 2014 (1.0)

  • Round 1 pick #18 Eric Ebron TE UNC
Geno Smith needs a go to weapon, and Ebron could be the best TE in the draft

Geno Smith needs a go to weapon, and Ebron could be the best TE in the draft

The Jets need play makers on offense, especially at tight end. Young quarterbacks need a great tight end in order to develop because they offer a big check down target in the middle of the field. Dustin Keller was Mark Sanchez’s security blanket, it’s time to get Geno Smith his own tight end. Eric Ebron is a great tight end who can easily get open despite his massive size. He works well in the middle with great hands and is an above average run blocker. While he is a versatile player and can line up in the slot, some of the knocks on him is that he still needs to get stronger and run better routes. He would be a great player for the Jets, who are desperate for a playmaking tight end.

  • Round 2 pick#17: Brandin Cooks WR Oregon St.
Time for some home cooking in the Big Apple

Time for some home cooking in the Big Apple

Another weapon for Geno Smith in round 2. With a deep receiver class, the Jets will get a late first round talent in the middle of the second round. Cooks maybe undersized and not a physical receiver, but he makes up for it with his athleticism. He is a great athlete who can make plays and gain multiple yards after the catch. With the Jets lacking explosive weapons in their receiving core, Cooks would give Smith a receiver who can finally stretch the field and make big plays.

  • Round 3 Pick # 5 Michael Sam DE Mizzou
The Jets need to get younger at outside linebacker

The Jets need to get younger at outside linebacker

Now Rex Ryan gets to add to the defense. While the Jets front seven is formidable, it’s unlikely the will bring back Calvin Pace who is 33. Instead they will need to find another 3-4 outside linebacker. Sam played defensive end in college, but projects to be a stand up linebacker in the pros. He’s a good pass rusher that plays the run extremely well. While he maybe raw rushing the passer and a bit undersized, he’s a ball hawk with a great motor. Don’t forget the Jets took Sheldon Richardson from Mizzou last year and look how that turned out. The Jets might want to bring in Richardson’s former teammate to help bolster their defense.

  • Round 3 pick #16 Donte Moncrief WR Ole Miss
    Another building block at recover

    Another building block at receiver

In the second round the Jets got Geno Smith a playmaker, now in round three they get him a go to receiver. While Moncrief ‘s speed keeps him from being a first round pick, he would be a steal in round three. He’s a huge receiver who is a matchup nightmare physically for corners. He has great hands and can catch well in traffic. While he may not stretch the field, he could become Geno’s go to target on third down and in the red zone. He would be a nice value pick here.

  • Round 4 pick # 15 Chris Davis CB Auburn
The Jets finally address the secondary

The Jets finally address the secondary

With the Jets probably releasing Antonio Cromartie, there going to need a late round cornerback. Even if Cro is back for the Jets, there are still many questions about the Jets corners. While Davis may not have the best size or speed, he is a tough football player. He’s great physically in coverage and is a versatile player. He would be a great fit in Ryan’s defense because of his versatility and physicality. He could be a starter or a versatile role player despite being a mid round pick.

  • Round 5 pick #14 De’Anthony Thomas RB Oregon
    Speed kills

    Speed kills

Thomas might not be an every down running back in the NFL, but used effectively he could be a great playmaker. He is the most explosive player in terms of raw speed in this class, and could be  a huge difference maker. If the Jets use him on screens, special running plays, or as a receiver in space, Thomas could be another weapon for Geno Smith. Worst case scenario he could be a dynamic kick and punt returner for the Jets and give them a deadly special teams weapon.

  • Round 6 pick# 19 Crockett Gillmore TE Colorado St
The Jets need to add depth to a position with no depth

The Jets need to add depth to a position with no depth

Many people may ask why would the Jets draft two tight ends? The Jets had no tight end depth last year and need a solid backup for Ebron. While Cumberland is a decent tight end, the Jets should give him some competition. Gillmore is a huge target at 6’6 and could be a big threat in the red zone. While he is a raw prospect that needs to improve his catching and run blocking, Gillmore has rare size for a tight end. If he can develop he could be a good second string tight end who could be a good red zone target.

  • Round 7 pick #18 Spencer Long OG Nebraska
    A diamond in the rough?

    A diamond in the rough?

Long missed the entire 2013 season with a one injury. Had he been healthy he would have been one of the highest rated guards in this years draft. While there red flags about his durability, the Jets need to address the mess at left guard. If he can get healthy, Long could be a decent guard as he was a solid all around offensive lineman in college. If he can return to form, he could be a dark horse to start at guard or at least be a good backup for Gang Green in 2014. Do you agree with these picks? Who do you think the Jets should draft in 2014? Like and comment below.
